Cluster – Xanthoria Sp. (Drawing)
Following a bout of strong winds, the lanes of our village are generously littered with twigs adorned by lichen, inviting me to simply stroll down the lane by my house to discover these captivating organisms.
Lichens are a fascinating fusion of two organisms, fungus and algae, locked in a symbiotic relationship. Fungi lack the capacity to produce chlorophyll, making it impossible for them to generate their own energy from the sun as plants do. Algae, on the other hand, are proficient at photosynthesis and have established a partnership with fungi. In exchange for vital nutrients provided by the fungi, the algae receive protection from harmful ultraviolet light through the fungi's structural attributes. It's interesting to note that the fungi take on the dominant role in this partnership, effectively "farming" the algae to produce the nourishment they require.
