This tree is one of many ancient yews that grow in Kingley Vale, near Chichester, West Sussex. Some of the yews in the valley art reportedly over 2000 years old. Kinley Vale is the one of largest yew tree woodlands in Europe and an important habitat for local wildlife.

The site has been used by humans for millennia, with bronze age burial mounds on the surrounding hills and more recently it was used by the Canadian army as a target range in the Second World War.

Yews hold a special place in my heart. I dedicated 20 years of my life to crafting traditional longbows, and I've come to realise that yew wood is nothing short of perfect for this purpose. The creamy white sapwood possesses incredible tensile strength, while the orange heartwood excels in handling compression. Over the years, I've learned how to harness these unique properties as a bowyer, creating weapons that have left their mark on history.
