Following a strong gust of wind, the lanes in my village are often scattered with twigs adorned in lichen. All I have to do is step into the lane by my house to witness these spectacular organisms.
This specific specimen was a delightful find by my twin sons during a walk near Ichen Abbas, Hampshire.
Lichens are a fascinating fusion of two organisms, fungus and algae, engaged in a unique symbiotic relationship. Fungi, lacking the ability to produce chlorophyll, cannot harvest their own energy from the sun like plants. Algae, on the other hand, excel at photosynthesis and have forged a partnership with fungi. In return for essential nutrients provided by the fungi, the algae gain protection from harmful ultraviolet light through the fungi's structural attributes. In this intriguing dynamic, it's the fungi that play the dominant role, effectively "farming" the algae to produce the nourishment they need.
Drawn in Froxfield By Nick McMillen in 2021
Charcoal made from this tree and compressed charcoal on Fabriano Artistico 300gsm hot press paper
Signed and dated by the artist
Dimensions 50 cm x 75 cm
