This design is woven with red cedar bark, harvested from woodland near the artist. Twenty years ago the cedar plantation was felled, leaving about a quarter of the cedar and replanted with native woodland species. This included establishing hazel coppice areas, a wild orchard, hundreds of oaks and areas left to natural regeneration. Now, the replanting and natural regeneration is maturing into diverse woodland and with the slow removal of a few of the remaining cedar trees Nick has gently expanded these areas.
Nick takes inspiration for his designs from mathematical patterns, scientific ideas and technological discoveries. He is interested in the idea of representing these concepts using a technology that has been around for thousands of years.
